On Wednesday, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the leader of Iran’s theocracy, stated that Iran should further enhance its military capabilities, particularly its missile program. His remark followed threats of military action from U.S. President Donald Trump if Tehran refused to negotiate regarding its nuclear program.
Khamenei stressed the need for continued progress. He stated, “We cannot be satisfied with our current level. While we previously set a limit on the accuracy of our missiles, we now believe this limit is no longer sufficient. We have to move forward.” He underscored the importance of focusing on innovation within the Iranian military.
Many view Khamenei’s current stance as a risky gamble, which could ultimately harm the country and exacerbate its already severe economic crisis.
As the Islamic Republic celebrated the 46th anniversary of the 1979 revolution, the Rial, Iran’s currency, plummeted by over 99 percent. Once valued at 70 Rials to the U.S. Dollar on the eve of the revolution, it reached an unprecedented low of 917,000 Rials to the U.S. Dollar this week.
