Sept. 26 – The Islamic Republic of Iran said it had acquired thousands of classified documents from Israel including content related to its military and nuclear sites, in a documentary aired on state television this week.
The Islamic Republic said it had also acquired the details of 189 Israeli nuclear scientists and specialists.
The claims follow revelations that Israel had infiltrated Iran with spies working for its Mossad intelligence agency and gathered a wealth of data about Iran’s nuclear and defense systems as well information about its top military and nuclear officials. Israel attacked several nuclear sites in Iran, and assassinated key defense and nuclear officials in June, during a 12-day war with the Islamic Republic.
Iran said it had begun rebuilding its nuclear plants, as it fears another war with Israel could take place.
The snap decision to rebuild may also be fueled by an impending deadline to reimpose international sanctions on Tehran by the U.S. and Europe, which would penalize any development of its nuclear program.
And a British couple detained in Iran on charges of espionage are due to attend a court hearing on Saturday, according to their son.
Joe Bennett said his parents, Lindsay and Craig Foreman, were living in “horrific conditions and suffering repeated human rights violations,” and that authorities had not provided any information about the legal proceedings.
A spokesperson for the U.K.’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said the department was “deeply concerned” by the detentions and had raised the case directly with Iranian authorities.
