The leader of Iran’s theocracy, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had no choice last month but to play down the significant damage inflicted on its axis of resistance by Israel’s military operations and the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in Syria, during his first speech since Assad’s demise. “Iran is strong and powerful – and will become even stronger,” Khamenei claimed.

The theocracy is now contending with serious strategic and logistical losses. The fall of Bashar al-Assad’s Syria, an invaluable ally,  significantly undermined its influence in the region. Furthermore, the recent election of Nawaf Salam as Lebanon’s prime minister dealt a blow to the theocracy’s Hezbollah militia group, a critical component of its axis of resistance.

With both Hezbollah and Hamas considerably weakened, and the potential revival of US President Donald Trump’s Maximum Pressure campaign against the regime in Iran looming, Israel could be bolstered by US support in targeting Iran’s nuclear sites, as it did against nuclear facilities in Syria in 2007 and in Iraq in 1981.
