Nov. 2 – The European Union called the execution on Monday of German-Iranian national Jamshid Sharmahd by the Islamic Republic of Iran a threat to the relationship between Iran and the EU, in a statement published on Tuesday.
The EU’s High Representative Josep Borrell offered his condolences to Mr. Sharmahd’s family and urged the Iranian government to abolish the death penalty, in the statement.
The pro-monarchy campaigner was charged with “corruption on earth” and sentenced to death in 2023. Responding to the execution, Germany said on Thursday that it would close all three of its Iranian consulates.
The detained Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi has been admitted to hospital after the launch of a campaign to secure medical treatment for the Iranian human rights activist.
Mohammadi, who is reported to have serious heart and lung conditions, was denied medical treatment by Iranian officials for more than two months.
Concerns about the treatment of detained women’s rights activists inside Iran’s jails have been raised by international rights bodies, who say violence against women is being enabled as a means to intimate and silence female prisoners.
And oil prices dropped this week, as fears of an all-out war in the Middle East were eased, following calibrated strikes by Israel against Iran which avoided energy facilities in the country.
Oil prices soared following Iran’s Oct. 1 attack against Israel, in which Iran launched more than 180 ballistic missiles at the country.
The Israel-Iran-Palestine conflict in the Middle East has lasted for more than one year, and has included several unsuccessful attempts at finalizing a truce.
