This week marked one year since the attack by Hamas, considered a terrorist group by the EU and the US, against Israel.  The Oct. 7, 2023, attack was the largest-ever terrorist attack on Israeli soil. Hamas militants killed one thousand two hundred people, including 815 civilians, wounded 7,500, and took 251 people hostage.

A few days before the anniversary, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, delivered his first Friday sermon in nearly five years. Holding a rifle in hand and wearing a checkered Kaffiyeh,  he described the attack as a “logical and legitimate” punishment for what he called Israeli crimes and called for more anti-Israel struggle.

The fighting in the region has claimed the lives of nearly 42,000 people in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry, and dozens more in Lebanon and Syria, including key figures holding senior positions in Iran-backed militia groups.

The latest round of fighting has increased fears across the world of an all-out war between Iran and Israel following a direct missile attack on Oct. 1 by the regime in Iran against Israel. Israel said its military response to the attack would be “lethal, precise, and especially surprising.”
