Israel’s military offensive against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s armed proxy groups in the Middle East, which are part of Iran’s so-called Axis of Resistance, reached a tipping point this week as its troops launched a limited ground incursion in southern Lebanon, making fears about an all-out war in the region more plausible.
Hassan Nasrallah, the Secretary General of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, was killed by Israel, dealing a significant blow to the republic’s activities in the region. Israel also assassinated 15 more Hezbollah members in southern Lebanon and three Palestinian leaders in Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. An Israeli attack in Syria’s capital city, Damascus, resulted in the death of a consultant working for Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Iran reacted to the assassinations by firing more than 180 missiles directly at Israel. While most of the rockets were intercepted by Israel, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that there would be a retaliation for the attack. Iran said it would respond to any direct assault on Iranian soil with “multiplied intensity.”
In a show of solidarity with Palestine, the Houthi militant group in Yemen, an Islamic Republic proxy responsible for a spate of attacks on commercial ships and vessels in the Red Sea in recent months, warned several Greek ships that they would be attacked if they continued to dock in Israel’s ports. The Houthis have carried out almost 100 attacks on ships in the Red Sea, sunk two vessels, seized another, and killed at least four people since the conflict between Palestine and Israel began almost one year ago.
