Flash Briefing: Oct. 4, 2024

Oct. 4 – The United Kingdom’s Defense Secretary John Healy said Britain’s armed forces had been supporting Israel and working to deescalate the tensions in the Middle East, following Iran’s missile attack against Israel.

The attack, which took place on Tuesday, involved the launch from inside Iran of almost 200 missiles at Israel, and were intended to hit Israeli military infrastructure.

The UK said it supported Israel’s right to defend itself, and urged Iran to stop its attacks.

The European Union also condemned the attack in a statement, calling the assault a serious threat to regional security.

The EU said it remained “fully committed” to reducing regional tensions and that it would continue to engage with states to try to resolve the conflict.

And at least 71 individuals who were accused of crimes as children in Iran have been executed by Iran’s government since 2010, according to a report by Iran Human Rights.

The practice of executing people accused of crimes as minors is banned in Iran’s legislation, and in international treaties ratified by Iran.

The Islamic Republic is currently the world’s most prolific executioner of children.
