Sep. 13 – The UK, France and Germany said Iran had transferred ballistic missiles to Russia for its war against Ukraine while announcing fresh sanctions against Iran over the allegations, in a joint statement published by the British government on Tuesday.
The countries said the move was a threat to Europe’s security, and stopped flights to Iran alongside the cancellation of bilateral air service agreements with the Islamic Republic as part of the new sanctions on the country.
The US also launched a separate set of sanctions which targeted individuals and entities in Iran and Russia connected to the supply of Iranian weapons to Moscow.
The states called the procurement an escalation of Iran’s military support for Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Iran has denied the claims and called them “false and misleading,” and a form of propaganda to distract from the US’s supply of arms to Israel.
And Iran’s government has ramped up surveillance in Saqqez, the home town of Mahsa Amini, ahead of the two-year anniversary of her death.
Amini died on Sep. 16 in 2022 while in police custody after being arrested for failing to wear her hijab according to the country’s mandatory dress code. Her murder sparked nationwide anti-government protests and launched the ‘Woman, Life, Freedom’ gender equality movement.
Iran officials are believed to have installed additional cameras in Amini’s birth town on several roads in anticipation of fresh protests next week.
