Germany’s Federal Court of Justice (BGH) has upheld the conviction of an Iranian man connected to ISIS, who was accused by authorities of “acquiring cyanide to carry out a terrorist attack against German citizens.”

The 25-year-old Iranian, identified as Jalal J., reportedly planned to use poison in an attack targeting German citizens on New Year’s Eve in 2023. Jalal J. was arrested in 2023 during a complex operation in Castrop-Rauxel, in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.

Following an 11-month trial, a court in Dortmund found him guilty of “attempting to produce a toxic substance for terrorist purposes,” leading to a four-year prison sentence.

The defense attorneys filed an appeal to review Jalal J.’s sentence. However, the BGH upheld the conviction on Sept. 3. The court has ordered that Jalal J. be placed under strict police supervision after his prison term due to the danger he poses to society.

The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), which functions under Germany’s Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community, issued a warning in late June 2023 that the risk of terrorist attacks by Islamist groups in Germany had increased compared to previous years. It identified that risk as one of the most significant threats to national security.

In the case of Jalal J., an investigation uncovered that he had plans to obtain cyanide and received instructions from an unknown person on how to produce this hazardous chemical. In January 2023, he was arrested alongside his brother following warnings from security agencies.

His messages exchanged through communication platforms with members of ISIS led security organizations to identify him as a suspect.

Ultimately, German authorities concluded that ISIS had instructed him to acquire cyanide and target people living in Germany.
