Oct. 13 – Israel cut electricity, food and water supplies in Gaza following the capture of more than 100 Israelis by militant group Hamas this week. The Israeli government said it would reinstate access when all of the hostages were freed.
The move followed a deadly attack in Israel on Saturday by the group, kickstarting the Israel-Hamas war, which has left more than 1,500 people including children dead and more than 9,000 injured.
The Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah has been linked to the conflict.
The Global Imams Council, the world’s first transnational committee of Sunni and Shia Muslim faith leaders condemned Hamas’ actions in Israel in a statement released on Oct. 11, and expressed their support for the Jewish community.
The council issued a Fatwa against Hamas in March, charging the group with crimes against humanity and forbidding Muslims from supporting the militia group, which has been designated a terrorist organization by the EU, the UK and the US.
And human rights experts expressed dismay at the ongoing imprisonment of Iranian human rights defender Narges Mohammadi.
Mohammadi, who has been jailed several times in the past for her activism, is currently serving an 11 year prison sentence for “spreading anti-State propaganda.” She was the recipient of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for her commitment to advancing women’s rights in Iran.
The experts concluded that her detention was arbitrary in a previous investigation, and called for Mohammadi’s immediate release.
