July 28 – Mohammad Eslami, Iran’s Vice President and the Head of the country’s Atomic Energy Organization, said Iran would slow down its production of uranium if the United States agreed to revive the 2015 nuclear deal.
The deal, which fell apart following the US’s withdrawal under former US President Donald Trump, provides Iran with sanctions relief in return for curbs on its nuclear program.
Eslami made the comment to Japanese news outlet Kyodo News, while also offering Japan collaboration opportunities in Iran’s nuclear electricity sector.
An Irish man who was jailed in Iran in October for allegedly “providing information to an enemy country,” and released on humanitarian grounds in May, said the ordeal had left him with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Bernard Phelan told Irish broadcaster RTÉ that he could hear beatings taking place throughout the night in prison, and that officials used “white torture” to demoralize inmates.
Phelan also said a judge had tried to make him sign documents in Persian. After refusing to sign the papers, the judge’s translator told him he would die in jail.
And the International Olympic Committee said it reserved the right to take action against Iran, following a rise in the number of athletes being persecuted in the country for holding anti-regime views.
The committee said possible actions could be announced before the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and added that it continued “to monitor the situation very closely.”
Several prominent athletes in Iran have been arrested, tortured and executed in recent months, following anti-government protests which began after the death of 22-year-old Kurdish-Iranian Jina Mahsa Amini, while in police custody.
