Pell, Ryan McNeill and Kaylee Kang LONDON, Oct 15 (Reuters) – Iran and its proxies have carried out dozens of pinpoint strikes on infrastructure in the [Persian] Gulf since the start of the war, systematically disabling critical equipment and causing cascading failures and economic damage region-wide in a deft campaign that helps explain how the Islamic Republic has held its own against the more powerful US military. Iran and the allies it arms went after vital oil-routing systems at Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates, the main port outside the Strait of Hormuz, disabling operations for weeks. They hit Qatar’s Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas facility, striking two of the “cold boxes” that house cooling equipment that liquefies gas. They targeted airports across at least four countries, this month striking one in Saudi Arabia four days in a single week. And they incinerated a pumping station and damaged two others along a key Saudi pipeline, cutting off another main bypass around Iran’s blockade of Hormuz. By targeting infrastructure and disrupting investment events central to Saudi Arabia’s economic ambitions, they aim to pressure Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to both meet Houthi demands in Yemen and persuade US President Donald Trump to ease the US blockade choking Iran‘s economy, according to Saudi, Iranian and regional sources. The campaign reflects a calculation by Iran and the Houthis that Saudi Arabia’s prosperity, investment ambitions and exposure to disruption make it a vulnerable pressure point in a confrontation stretching from the Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf to Bab el-Mandeb in the Red Sea. Iran, under mounting economic and military pressure following the war launched by the US and Israel on February 28, is seeking to raise the cost of Washington’s strategy by targeting its regional partners, said Michael Knights of strategic advisory Horizon Engage. “The Iranians are in a chokehold,” he said. Unable to force Washington to change course directly, Tehran and the Houthis are “hammering Saudi Arabia, they’re hammering the weak point,” he added, exploiting the kingdom’s economic vulnerability and desire for stability. A relaxation of pressure on Tehran would likely strengthen its ability to sustain the political, financial and military support and flow of weapons and cash on which the US says the movement depends. But the Houthis also have their own demands, said two Saudi sources and three regional sources familiar with Saudi thinking: an end to Saudi military operations and restrictions on Yemeni ports and airports, regular flights to Iran, restored salary payments, war compensation and an end to Riyadh’s support for Yemen’s recognised government. One man, previously identified as Danish national Ali S., was sentenced to eight years and six months for preparing an assassination and aggravated arson, judges ruled. “The court is convinced that the defendant, S., was recruited by the Iranian secret service and integrated into it to carry out state-sponsored terrorist activities in Germany under Iran’s direction,” the court in the northern city of Hamburg said in a statement. The Iranian Embassy in Germany did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Another man, previously named as Afghan national Tawab M., was sentenced to four years and six months for his role in the plot. The verdicts, which can be appealed, come as a war with Iran launched by the United States and Israel in February has spilled over into an escalating conflict between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis. German federal prosecutors brought criminal charges against the two men in May. Mizan, the news agency affiliated with the Iranian judiciary, reported that the execution was carried out at dawn on Oct. 14. Authorities claimed that Mostafavi was linked to the “monarchist movement” and had sent videos and photos to foreign media outlets during the December and January protests. Mostafavi was a professional mountaineer who had climbed Mount Everest and several other well-known Himalayan peaks. He was also a musician. On Oct. 13, human rights activists reported that Mostafavi had been placed in solitary confinement at Shahab Kerman Prison, also known as Kerman Central Prison, in southeastern Iran. They also reported that his family had been summoned for a final visit. That same day, the office of Prince Reza Pahlavi posted about Mostafavi on X: “Ali-Sina Mostafavi has climbed Mount Everest and then taken to the streets to fight for his country’s freedom. Now he is at imminent risk of execution after being placed in solitary confinement. His family has been summoned for their final visit.” The post continued: “This young athlete was sentenced to death in a sham court of the Islamic Republic following forced confessions obtained under torture. The potential deployment of the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal would mark a significant escalation in the conflict, although officials familiar with military planning discussions told CNN questions remain over its effectiveness in achieving Washington’s strategic objectives.
